Itโ€™s easy for New York Jets fans to be frustrated by the on-field product through the first six weeks of the 2025 season. An 0-6 record, questionable coaching decisions, and poor execution have all contributed to the fan baseโ€™s disappointment.

If thereโ€™s a silver lining to the teamโ€™s struggles, it is that the organization may have found a quality general manager.

Darren Mougey was something of an afterthought when he was hired as the teamโ€™s top executive. Head coach Aaron Glenn was widely seen as the main figure leading the new regime.

But with shrewd trades, smart draft selections, and some quality signings, Mougeyโ€™s impact has already been felt.

Mougey passing first test

While many fans and analysts have pointed to Mougeyโ€™s spotty record in the 2025 free agency class, his first real impact came on draft day.

Seventh overall pick Armand Membou has played well through his first six games. Tight end Mason Taylor, safety Malachi Moore, linebacker Kiko Mauigoa, and wide receiver Arian Smith have also made notable contributions.

The fact that the Jets have received contributions from five different rookies is a promising sign for Mougey. It suggests he can scout, evaluate, and accumulate talent through the draftโ€”an essential part of any general managerโ€™s job.

Then came the post-draft moves.

The front office made key trades for defensive tackles Jowon Briggs and Harrison Phillips and cornerback Jarvis Brownlee. All three have filled immediate needs and played well in their roles.

An improving draft class and effective trades are important achievements for a first-year executive like Mougey. Together, they show the organization may be in good hands.

Still work to be done

Mougey has done plenty of good in his first year as general manager.

But the roster still needs work.

Fans and analysts have criticized the teamโ€™s lack of depth at edge rusher and wide receiver. Mougey made few moves to address either position, but itโ€™s important to remember that no front office can fill every need in Year 1 of a rebuild.

Before the Jets can look ahead to next season, there are decisions to make at the trade deadline. New York is a candidate to move several key assets. Running back Breece Hall, linebacker Quincy Williams, and edge rusher Jermaine Johnson have all been mentioned in trade rumors.

If the Jets decide to sell at the deadline, getting strong value in return will be critical to Mougeyโ€™s tenure. Acquiring future draft capital would increase flexibility in the upcoming offseason.

In 2026, Mougey will be tasked with finding a franchise quarterback and addressing lingering needs at wide receiver, edge rusher, safety, and linebacker. The front office is using the teamโ€™s struggles this season as an evaluation period.

A full year removed from his hiring, Mougey and his staff should now have a clear sense of the rosterโ€™s weaknesses.

If Year 2 is better than Year 1, the Jets may finally be headed in the right direction, even if it doesnโ€™t look that way right now.
