The New York Jets may have a plan in place for their backup quarterback position.

According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, the Jets hosted Russell Wilson for a visit at their team facility in Florham Park, N.J. They are considering him to be the No. 2 quarterback on their depth chart behind Geno Smith.

Rosenblatt adds that Smith was consulted on potential backup options, and was excited about Wilson.

The Jets’ quarterback depth chart currently appears as follows:

  • Geno Smith
  • Cade Klubnik
  • Brady Cook
  • Bailey Zappe

Head coach Aaron Glenn has already stated that Smith will be the team’s starting quarterback. However, the QB2 spot has been left vacant throughout the offseason.

The Jets have 2025 undrafted free agent Brady Cook and 2022 fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe on their roster, but neither player is close to being considered a viable backup, with both throwing more interceptions than touchdowns in their NFL careers.

In last weekend’s NFL draft, the Jets added a fresh face to the room, fourth-round pick Cade Klubnik. New York traded up to draft the Clemson product.

Despite their interest in Klubnik as a young prospect worth developing, the 22-year-old clearly needs time to hone his craft before he can touch the field in a regular season game.

Thus, the Jets continue to scour the free agent market for a reliable veteran backup behind Smith, with Wilson emerging as the favorite to secure the job.

Wilson, 37, began the 2025 season as the New York Giants’ starting quarterback. In six games (three starts), he completed 69 of 119 passes (58%) for 831 yards (7.0 yards per attempt), three touchdowns, and three interceptions. Wilson had a 77.4 passer rating and a 25.6 QBR.

The Giants began the season 0-3 under Wilson’s lead before turning to first-round pick Jaxson Dart.
