Let’s rewind the clock to June 30, 2025.
On that date, with a few weeks to go until NFL teams opened training camp ahead of the 2025 season, ESPN published a 2026 NFL mock draft. The first overall pick, going to the Cleveland Browns?
Cade Klubnik, quarterback, Clemson.
Klubnik was the talk of the NFL draft community after a breakout 2024 junior season for the Tigers. In his second full season as a starter, Klubnik completed 63.4% of his passes for 3,639 yards, 36 touchdowns, and six interceptions, adding 588 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
Compared to his first season as a starter, Klubnik threw for 795 more yards, 17 more touchdowns, and three fewer interceptions, while rushing for 205 more yards and three more touchdowns. His arrow was pointing directly up, suggesting he was on a trajectory to become an NFL star.
Then, 2025 happened.
Klubnik’s numbers declined across the board, and the Tigers stumbled to their worst season in 15 years.
After all the hype, Klubnik ended up going to the New York Jets in the fourth round of the 2026 draft. Given his draft status, Klubnik is typically viewed as a developmental project with the ceiling of a quality backup.
But as we evaluate Klubnik’s NFL ceiling, it cannot be forgotten that, one year ago, Klubnik had people thinking he was talented enough to be the first overall pick. Can a player’s potential really drop that far in one year?
