The New York Jets made several additions to strengthen their secondary this offseason.
After making NFL history by going a full season without an interception, it was wise to restructure the unit.
One of the team’s primary additions was 6-foot-4 corner Nahshon Wright, who led cornerbacks with five interceptions last season and earned a Pro Bowl appearance.
Speaking on the Jets’ Official Podcast with Eric Allen and former Jets WR Quincy Enunwa, fellow CB Azareye’h Thomas lauded Wright’s smooth-moving abilities.
“It’s great when you have a guy in your room who can move like that,” Thomas said of Wright. “Because you know teams are going to have trouble getting open, and we’ve got guys that are going to get up there and challenge you.”
While Wright was excellent on the ball last season, with five interceptions and six pass breakups, he certainly struggled in coverage.
He allowed 725 yards and seven touchdowns on passes thrown in his direction, both ranking fifth-highest among cornerbacks.
As our own Michael Nania thoroughlyย broke down, Wright is a boom-or-bust type player, but his tantalizing ceiling is certainly worth the gamble the Jets took on him this offseason, committing just one year and $3.5 million guaranteed to the 27-year-old.
Thomas, on the other hand, is preparing for his second NFL season. During his rookie campaign, he appeared in 12 games for New York while starting five games down the stretch.
He logged 22 combo tackles (13 solo) and seven pass deflections while passing the eye test. Fans are excited to see how he can progress as he enters his second year in the league following his first real offseason in the NFL.
Ultimately, there should be a lot of competition at the top of the Jets’ CB depth chart. Between Wright, Thomas, Brandon Stephens, and D’Angelo Ponds, Gang Green’s CB room is shaping up to be a feisty group this season.
