During his preseason debut, New York Jets edge rusher Joseph Ossai sustained a foot injury in the first half of Friday night’s preseason finale.
Now, there is an update regarding his status.
According to New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, who spoke to reporters on Monday, Ossai is “week-to-week” after rupturing his plantar fascia.
Ossai, 26, signed a three-year deal with the Jets this offseason worth $34.5 million. He is expected to play a key role in the team’s revamped edge unit, and missing him to begin the season would be a tough blow.
His status for Week 1 remains unknown, but Ossai has struggled to stay healthy this summer. The former Cincinnati Bengal began the summer on New York’s PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list and only played in the Jets’ preseason finale, where he got hurt in the first half.
Throughout his minimal playing time, though, his play was encouraging. On 11 snaps, he tallied two tackles and a quarterback pressure.
Glenn’s “week-to-week” description is vague given the circumstances. The Jets’ Week 1 matchup against the Tennessee Titans is less than two weeks away. With that in mind, the “week-to-week” status Glenn used to describe the situation doesn’t mean he’s a lock to suit up at the start of the season.
However, Glenn assured that the injury should not be a long-term issue.
For now, everyone will have to wait and see how Ossai’s status changes leading into game week. Looking ahead, it’s better not to rush him into action, but missing Ossai would be a notable Week 1 loss.
