The New York Jets and Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco have agreed on a one-year deal to play backup to Sam Darnold.

Rumors persisted about the New York Jets‘ desire to sign a veteran quarterback to play backup to young Sam Darnold. On Friday, those rumors will fade.

The Jets and Joe Flacco agreed to a one-year deal, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“Jets are signing former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco to a one-year deal, sources tell ESPN. Jets GM Joe Douglas was a Ravensโ€™ scout in 2008 when Baltimore drafted Flacco in round one. Now Flacco will rejoin Douglas, and compete for the backup job when heโ€™s healthy and ready.”

Flacco, 35, is an Audobon, NJ native, meaning he’s “coming home.” Right? Not exactly, as Audobon is a South Jersey town just a hop, skip and jump away from Philadelphia, PA.

The Delaware product who started just eight games for the Denver Broncos a year ago—throwing for 1,822 yards and six touchdowns to five interceptions—is most recognized as Mr. Perfect (for one tournament).

Flacco earned Super Bowl MVP honors when he led the Baltimore Ravens to their second Vince Lombardi Trophy in 2013 (34-31 victory over the tough San Francisco 49ers). On that night (when the lights were on), he threw for 287 yards and three first-half touchdowns on 22 of 33 passing.

Of course, Lamar Jackson‘s emergence two years ago helped push the high-earning Flacco out the door. Jets general manager Joe Douglas is extremely familiar with Flacco, having been employed by Baltimore as a scout when it drafted the small-college gunslinger in 2008.
