The fifth-year guard rushed to the defense of Adam Gase after reports surfaced that the head coach is a primary reason for the trade demands of Jamal Adams.

On Wednesday, it was reported that Jets head coach Adam Gase is a “major factor” behind Jamal Adams‘ lack of trust in the organization’s future, and thus, his trade request.

Less than 24 hours following that initial report, newly re-signed guard Alex Lewis released this statement to The Athletic, via Connor Hughes:

Throughout his statement, Lewis had some extremely passionate words regarding his support for Gase and the entire organizational structure in place at Florham Park.

“I have mad respect for coach Gase,” Lewis stated. “We are building a winning culture and mentality from the top down. I believe in this staff, this organization, and most importantly, my teammates.”

It is not often that you see a player randomly come out and defend his team against the media in this manner, especially when his name has not been involved at all in any of the rumblings surrounding the franchise in recent weeks.

“I felt like all of this needed to be said on the heels of reports lumping all the players in one mindset disparaging the head coach,” Lewis stated.

A tremendous showcase of leadership from Lewis, a glowing endorsement for Gase, and a very bad look for Adams, who is rapidly damaging his reputation as a positive locker room influence.

Perhaps this is exactly what Adams wants? To force his way out of town by escalating things to the point where Joe Douglas cannot possibly warrant bringing him back?

Thanks to the power of social media, this has evolved into a player-vs-team saga unlike any we have ever seen before.
