Zach Wilson has a message to close his rookie season

While teams around the NFL go about major changes for “Black Monday”, New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson had shared some parting words for fans on Twitter after a roller-coaster season in his debut NFL season.

“Not satisfied with where we ended up in the standings, but I’m proud of this group of guys for continuing to fight every single snap week in and week out,” Wilson writes. “That’s something we can build on, and that’s what we plan to do. Couple days off and then back in the lab.”

After a disappointing performance in the blustering winds against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Wilson and the Jets finished the year with a 4-13 record. Only playing in 13 games, Zach finishes with a 3-10 record as a starter.

Wilson has been at the center of a young and hungry roster throughout the 2021 season, rebuilt and revamped by general manager Joe Douglas nearly head-to-toe. The team faced some major adversity this year — whether it’s injuries, COVID-19, or even bad salmon — but there are plenty of reasons to believe in its future.

Wilson finished his rookie season with 2,334 passing yards, 13 total touchdowns, and 12 total turnovers, completing 213 of 383 passes (55.6%). While his season started off rough, Wilson found some momentum after returning from injury, recording nine total touchdowns to only three turnovers over his last seven starts. That includes zero interceptions over the final five games.

The 2021 Jets led the league in snaps played by rookies courtesy of first-year head coach Robert Saleh‘s vision. The team was expected to be young thanks to the plethora of draft assets invested into the roster, but having young players and playing them is different. Saleh committed to building around the team’s youth.

Set for another draft with plenty of picks, Douglas must continue to add to his roster as he aims to build a contender for 2022.
