New York Jets considered in the mix for Deebo Samuel after the 49ers star requests trade

Star wide receiver Deebo Samuel officially requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers, Jeff Darlington of ESPN reported. The reasoning behind Samuel’s trade request remains unclear.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport later named the New York Jets among four suitors for Samuel, alongside the Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, and Detroit Lions.

Rapoport says the request was made more than a week ago and that it is not centered around money, citing “issues with how he’s used.”

Samuel finished the 2021 season with 1,405 receiving yards on 77 receptions. But what makes him a truly unique weapon on the gridiron is that production through the air paired with his talent rushing out of the backfield. Samuel recorded 365 rushing yards on 59 carries in 2021, cementing him as possibly the most versatile receiver in the entire NFL.

It just so happens that a certain green-clad team in the Tri-State Area has been searching for just that type of weapon. Now, it would seem, the prized jewel, the cream of the crop, the best possible scheme fit for Mike LaFleur’s system, could be on the move.

Joe Douglas should be foaming at the mouth to get his hands on Samuel after striking out on Tyreek Hill just a couple of weeks ago. Much has been made over the past year or so since Robert Saleh was hired as the Jets head coach about finding a receiver to play the “Deebo Samuel role” in LaFleur’s offense, and now, the 26-year-old Samuel himself has become available.

Jets left tackle Mekhi Becton, who is a very active presence on social media, has already begun recruiting on Twitter.

It would seem like a no-brainer that Douglas will be making a serious push to acquire Samuel’s services. Seeing as the Jets have the most connections to the 6-foot, 216-pound receiver, it seems like a safe bet to view them as the early frontrunners. The only question is what Douglas would have to give up.
