The New York Jets have begun building their practice squad
Following 53-man roster cutdowns on Tuesday, NFL teams have begun working on constructing their practice squads.
On Wednesday, the New York Jets announced they have added 12 players to their practice squad. Each player was previously cut by the team on Tuesday.
Here are the team’s initial 12 practice squad members:
- QB Chris Streveler
- WR Tarik Black
- WR Irvin Charles
- TE Kenny Yeboah
- T Chris Glaser
- T Grant Hermanns
- DL Bradlee Anae
- DL Jonathan Marshall
- DL Tanzel Smart
- LB Hamsah Nasirildeen
- LB DQ Thomas
- S Will Parks
Teams may place up to 16 players on their practice squad, so the Jets can still add four more pieces. One of those spots will go to linebacker Chazz Surratt, a 2021 third-round selection who was waived by Minnesota and signed with the Jets’ practice squad after clearing waivers (his signing is not official yet). Surratt converted from quarterback to linebacker at North Carolina.
Most notably, the Jets were able to keep folk hero Chris Streveler, who led three fourth-quarter comebacks this preseason. They were also able to keep 2021 draft picks Hamsah Nasirildeen and Jonathan Marshall, along with fan-favorite safety Will Parks.
Wednesday saw numerous former Jets players find new homes. Seven waived Jets players were claimed by other teams (more than any other team):
- S Jason Pinnock (Giants)
- CB Javelin Guidry (Cardinals)
- TE Trevon Wesco (Bears)
- LB Del’Shawn Phillips (Ravens)
- OT Chuma Edoga (Falcons)
- CB Isaiah Dunn (Seahawks)
- CB Rachad Wildgoose (Commanders)
Additionally, running back La’Mical Perine signed with the Eagles’ practice squad.
The Jets did not claim any players on waivers today, but that does not mean they will not make any further additions to the roster. Many players who were released as part of final roster cutdowns were released rather than waived, which means they immediately became free agents rather than being subjected to waivers. This applies to any player with at least four accrued seasons.
UPDATE (4:59 p.m. ET)
The Jets announced they have signed wide receiver Calvin Jackson to their practice squad after not including him in their initial announcement. New York is also signing former Eagles cornerback/special teamer Craig James. These additions bring the practice squad to 15 players.
