The New York Jets’ predicament at safety could lead Jarrick Bernard-Converse to change positions
It is no secret that the New York Jets’ biggest weakness on defense in 2022 was the safety position.
Veteran starters Lamarcus Joyner and Jordan Whitehead struggled both in deep coverage and in the box. Most of the Jets’ backup safeties also struggled in reserve roles, minus UDFA Tony Adams, who impressed in a small sample size.

The Jets entered the offseason with a massive need at safety, especially considering Joyner was no longer under contract.
Joe Douglas tried to address this by trading for veteran safety Chuck Clark prior to the 2023 NFL draft, but Clark has already been ruled out for the 2023 season with an ACL injury. Douglas quickly pivoted by replacing Clark with Adrian Amos.
Clark was going to fill a role in the box more so than in deep coverage, and Amos is expected to do the same. This leaves the Jets with a hole – they lack a “true FS” unless they plan to push all of their chips in on the small sample size from Tony Adams.
Fast forward to the sixth round of the 2023 NFL draft, where the Jets selected cornerback/safety hybrid from LSU Jarrick Bernard-Converse. Most likely, the Jets drafted Bernard-Converse in hopes that he can transition to a full-time safety.
- Is Bernard-Converse ideally a safety or a cornerback?
- Does he have true versatility?
- Where does he need development?
- What is his ceiling?
All of these questions and many more are answered on this edition of Blewett’s Blitz. Plus, a list of strengths and weaknesses can be seen at the bottom of this article!
