New York Jets safety Tony Adams’ impact goes much deeper than the gridiron
Before the start of the 2022 season, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who was familiar with New York Jets safety Tony Adams. Even now, there are probably fans who may not have heard of the Illinois product. But that hasn’t stopped the 24-year-old from making an impact – both on the field and off of it.
On Saturday, the Jets safety was in Cahokia, IL at his Project Backpack event where he donated backpacks and school supplies at the Team Armstead Center. He also shared stories with the youth there while trying to make a genuine impact on their lives.
“I wish there was a hero or somebody that could [have] inspire[d] me,” said Adams. “I just want to be real and care, so I can help inspire the next generation. That’s all that really matters in the end.”
The Jets safety also made a special announcement during the event, honoring a fallen child’s legacy and providing opportunity to others.
“The Jaylon McKenzie Legacy of Hope Scholarship is being awarded in its inaugural year of 2024 on behalf of the Tony Adams Foundation,” declared Adams.
McKenzie was a standout athlete in Illinois’ metro east area before he was shot and killed in 2019. He was just 14 years old.
As for Adams, he’s looking to improve on a surprising rookie year with the Jets.
Adams was a five-year player at Illinois, playing cornerback before switching to safety. He signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent ahead of the 2022 season and ended up making the team’s 53-man roster.
Adams only played 118 defensive snaps, but the Illinois product impressed when called upon as a starter late in the season, and could find himself as a main contributor at FS for the Jets in 2023.
