The Jets’ switch under center was no match for Miami on Black Friday
New quarterback, same result.
The New York Jets’ Tim Boyle era began – and perhaps ended – with a thud on Friday late afternoon, as Gang Green dropped a 34-13 decision to the Miami Dolphins. Boyle, stepping in for Zach Wilson, failed to lead the Jets to a touchdown over the first three full periods. Their lone end zone entry in that span came when Brandin Echols ran back a Tua Tagovailoa interception 30 yards for a score in the latter stages of the first half.

Miami had a dramatic retort. After the Jets got the ball back with two seconds remaining in the opening half thanks to a D.J. Reed interception, the team allowed Boyle to try a desperation Hail Mary in a dire attempt to score points. The heave, however, was intercepted by Jevon Holland at the cusp of the end zone and he took the 99-yard distance for a score that formally re-established a permanent two-possession lead.

The Boyle era was heralded by five consecutive punts while Miami built up a 10-0 lead. Though New York (4-7) stopped the Dolphins from scoring on their first drive via turnover on downs, Jason Sanders booted a 38-yard triple before Tua Tagovailoa found Tyreek Hill for a seven-yard collaboration.

As the offense continued to sputter, the Jets did not get into Miami territory until the middle stages of the fourth quarter. A 17-play, 55-yard drive that took just over seven minutes went as far as the Miami 14 before Boyle’s intended pass to Breece Hall was launched in the air by an Xavien Howard interception, landing in the arms of Jerome Baker.

Earlier, Miami had taken advantage of the Jets’ offensive ineptitude by taking a three-possession lead on Raheem Mostert’s 13-yard tally on the opening play of the final period. Mostert broke loose again when the Jets picked up a garbage time touchdown, the latter tally scored from 34 away.

Boyle did manage to somewhat beautify the scoreboard with a one-yard scoring toss to Garrett Wilson, which came after they were set up at the Miami 35 thanks to a botched hand-off from Tagovailoa.
