Everyone laughs at the New York Jets and their long playoff drought—now standing at 13 years—but the Denver Broncos aren’t that far behind.
Denver holds the NFL’s second-longest playoff drought at seven years. It’s tied for the seventh-longest playoff drought in all of American sports, with the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA and the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL.
Sean Payton was brought in specifically to end this drought. With Russell Wilson at quarterback and a ready-made defense, it was supposed to be a somewhat easy task (in some pundits’ eyes). It hasn’t turned out that way, but the Broncos still have a legitimate chance to end the streak this season.
With games against the New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, and Las Vegas Raiders left this season, it would be a massive disappointment if they didn’t finish the season at 10-7. If that happens, the Broncos are given an 80% chance to make the playoff according to the New York Times simulations. However, if they lose just one of those games and fall to 9-8, that drops to just 8%.
Every game from here on out is a playoff game for this team, and after losing two of the last three, they’re starting to slip back into the poor form they featured to start the season.
This is why Payton and Wilson are here, though. If they can’t break the streak this season, it’s fair to wonder if this era of Broncos football was simply a waste of time, money, and draft picks.
