The beloved New York Jets punter posted a picture that showed him passing his number to the star wide receiver
A jersey number has been passed from one great New York Jet to another.
In a post on Twitter (X) Monday night, punter Thomas Morstead officially passed his No. 5 jersey to star wide receiver Garrett Wison.

The switch was alluded to by Wilson before the 2023 season, as he stated that it would be the last year he would wear No. 17. It also means that Morstead, who is currently a free agent, would need a new number if/when he returns to the team next year.
Wilson wore No. 5 in college for Ohio State, where he played from 2019-2021. In those three seasons, the receiver racked up 2,213 yards and 23 touchdowns. Wilson’s best season was in 2021, when he had 1,058 yards and 12 touchdowns on 70 receptions.
With No. 17 opening up, there is room for ample speculation over who will take the number. One possible option could be star wide receiver Davante Adams, who currently plays for the Las Vegas Raiders.
Adams has an established connection to quarterback Aaron Rodgers, as the duo was highly successful during their time together in Green Bay. Additionally, Wilson liked a tweet this past July that suggested he could make the switch to make way for Adams.

With Wilson switching to a single-digit number, the aesthetic of watching the Jets’ star dominate corners will be a little different.
The hope is that Wilson’s switch not only brings a different look to his great performance but also the team’s overall success. Ohio State thrived with Wilson rocking the single-digit jersey, and with the receiver going back to his old number, the Jets and their fans would love to have the new jersey bring some of that winning to the professional level.
