Does ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ Jalen Key have a shot at NY Jets’ roster?

An all-encompassing look at the last pick in the 2024 NFL draft

Across three days and seven rounds, 258 players were chosen before Alabama’s Jaylen Key got a phone call from Joe Douglas, officially making him the latest “Mr. Irrelevant.”

Despite the moniker, players taken with the last choice of the draft surely have some degree of relevance to the teams who take them. Mr. Irrelevant is essentially viewed by his team as the top player among the hundreds who will go on to sign as undrafted free agents shortly after the draft ends. He is the one player whom the team decides they do not want to give a chance to sign elsewhere.

There aren’t many positions on this New York Jets roster where a Mr. Irrelevant would have a strong chance of making the team. Luckily for Key, safety is one of them. It is one of the Jets’ thinnest positions; head coach Robert Saleh already announced the team will be holding a competition for its two starting spots.

While Key is unlikely to throw his name into that ring, he has a real shot of making the roster as a backup. As of right now, his primary competitors are Jarrick Bernard-Converse, a 2023 sixth-round pick who hardly played in his rookie year, and Isaiah Oliver, a career backup cornerback who is converting to safety this offseason.

Does Key have a future on this Jets defense?

In the newest Blewett’s Blitz film review, we break down 24 plays of All-22 film from Key’s 2023 season with the Alabama Crimson Tide. The review showcases a complete synopsis of both the positives and the negatives in his game, painting a picture of how much development he needs to land a spot on the Jets’ roster. Plus, a full list of his strengths and weaknesses can be found at the bottom of the page.
