New York Jets sign former Bears running back to one-year contract
The New York Jets are taking a flier on a potentially explosive weapon.
On Wednesday morning, New York signed former Chicago Bears running back Tarik Cohen to a one-year deal, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Head coach Robert Saleh addressed the signing at his media availability, saying that Cohen is an “explosive playmaker” and is excited to see what he can do with the new kickoff return rules.
He also mentioned that Cohen will compete for the returner position with wide receiver Xavier Gipson. Saleh said that Gipson has “first dibs” but that multiple players are competing for the role.

It is the latest comeback attempt for Cohen, who last played in the NFL in 2020. Before a rash of injuries, including his ACL and Achilles, Cohen was a dynamic playmaker for the Bears. His best year was in 2018, when he had 1,169 yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns while also earning an All-Pro nod as a punt returner.
Cohen has had a rough past few years, due to both injuries and tragic losses of family members. His perseverance was shown in a 2022 piece with the Players’ Tribune, which documented his struggles and what he has done to overcome them.
Now, Cohen has another shot to make what would be a remarkable comeback to the NFL. If healthy, he could provide the Jets with another explosive playmaker on offense and special teams.
More importantly, though, it would be an inspiring ending to Cohen’s long journey back if he made an impact on what looks to be an extremely competitive Jets team in 2024.
