Police took the 26-year-old cornerback into custody; he was booked at 3:46 a.m. at the Morgan County jail in Alabama, which is Hayes’ home state. Hayes was later released at 5:07 a.m. on a $300 bond. The NFL has loosened its marijuana policy over the years; however, in the state of Alabama, possession of marijuana is a second-degree misdemeanor.
Cimini states that “A Jets spokesman said the team is aware of the situation and will refrain from further comment.”
Tae Hayes’ career
Hayes signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019 as an undrafted free agent out of Appalachian State. He was released by the Jaguars in December of the 2019 season.
After being released, Hayes was signed by the Dolphins, where he saw significant playing time in the final two games of the 2019 season. Since then, Hayes has bounced around from practice squad to practice squad without seeing many snaps. He had a short stint in the UFL and later returned to the NFL, where he spent time with the Panthers, Patriots, Ravens, and Lions before the Jets signed him to their practice squad in 2023.
Hayes was elevated for the Jets’ Week 7 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles due to injuries to cornerbacks D.J. Reed and Sauce Gardner. Hayes played 13 defensive snaps and recorded two tackles as he helped the Jets earn their first-ever victory over the Eagles.
Subsequently, Hayes was downgraded back to the Jets’ practice squad, where he remained for the rest of the 2023 season. On January 9, the Jets signed Hayes to a reserve/future contract.
