The New York Jets lose CB D.J. Reed to a familiar NFL team

The New York Jets lost veteran cornerback D.J. Reed to an extremely familiar NFL team, but it's not the worst-case scenario.

At least the New York Jets won’t have to play D.J. Reed each year—twice—like Morgan Moses, who just hopped on with the AFC East rival New England Patriots. Nonetheless, the now-Jets former cornerback agreed to terms with an extremely familiar franchise.

Reed, 28, agreed to a 3-year, $48 million deal with the Detroit Lions, with $32 million guaranteed, per NFL on FOX and insider Jordan Schultz.

It was expected that Reed wouldn’t be re-signed this offseason, and that’s exactly how it played out. He chose the Lions, the franchise responsible for cultivating a significant percentage of the Jets’ current coaching staff led by Aaron Glenn.

Arriving in Florham Park, NJ, in 2022, Reed represents one of Joe Douglas’s top free-agent signings. In three seasons with the Jets (46 games played), Reed tallied 2 interceptions, 32 passes defended, and 220 tackles (177 solo tackles).

Reed’s performance dipped slightly this past year, but that’s hardly surprising, given the entire unit’s decrease in productivity.

Beyond No. 1 cornerback Sauce Gardner, the New York Jets cornerback room features Michael Carter II, Qwan’tez Stiggers, Jarrick Bernard-Converse, Jarius Monroe, and Tre Swilling.
