A defensive back film expert discusses Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed of the New York Jets
The New York Jets’ cornerback trio is one of the best in the NFL. Pro Football Focus rated their entire secondary as the No. 1 unit in the league.
Joe Blewett already put out film reviews of Sauce Gardner and Michael Carter II. Blewett talks less about how the Jets’ corners compare to other cornerbacks around the NFL and more about their individual technique.
To talk more about general cornerback play, I asked Cody Alexander of Match Quarters to join me on The Score Boord Podcast. Cody is a former defensive backs coach at Baylor University and covers all things defense on his website, YouTube channel, and blog. His film breakdowns of cornerback technique are as detailed as any you’ll see.
Cody’s insights into not only cornerback play but defense and the NFL as a whole were fascinating. I hope you gain as much from our conversation as I did.
Some questions I asked Cody:
- Is Sauce overrated? Can he be called for holding on every play?
- How does D.J. Reed compare to other cornerbacks?
- Do cornerbacks have a short shelf life?
- How can any secondary contain the Dolphins’ receivers?
- Do the defensive line and pass rush drive coverage success or the reverse?
- How can the Jets’ defense win despite a very simplistic scheme?
Cody also discussed the comparison between Darrelle Revis and Richard Sherman, a big social media controversy back in the day.
