New York Jets punter Thomas Morstead is dedicating his 2024 season to a close friend.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Morstead announced he would be raising money for ALS in 2024 to honor his friend Steve Gleason. Gleason played for the Saints from 2000-06, primarily performing as a standout special teams player. He retired in 2008, one year before Morstead entered the league with New Orleans. In 2011, Gleason revealed that he was suffering from ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
“Iโm honored to announce that Iโm dedicating this season to my dear friend, Steve Gleason, and his unwavering commitment to helping as many people living with ALS as possible,” Morstead wrote. “Iโll be donating $1,000 for every punt I land inside the 20-yard line. Iโm grateful to be shining light on Team Gleason and appreciate you supporting Punt for ALS!“

On the website linked to the bottom of the post, Morstead shared another quote discussing his efforts.
“As many of you know, ALS is a devastating disease, but together, we can make a difference, and that is why I am dedicating this season to my good friend and former teammate, Steve Gleason, and Team Gleason.”
The website also says that Morstead will be partnering with opposing players to give away “exciting prizes such as a game-worn, signed jersey.” Fans will also have a chance to win Morstead’s two Super Bowl tickets when they donate to the cause.
It is a touching gesture from Morstead, who has consistently been one of the most upstanding players in the league. He dropped a career-high 36 punts inside the 20-yard line in 2023. The Jets hope they will not have to punt often during the season due to a much-improved offense. When they do punt, though, Morstead will ensure that his talent will go to a great cause.
