One of the New York Jets’ rising players is shooting for the stars in 2024.
During his media availability, edge rusher Jermaine Johnson discussed his mentality going into 2024 and a vote of confidence he received from head coach Robert Saleh.
“Just a lot of confidence. I’ve been here, I’ve done it. Now, I’m just looking to take my game to that next level. Saleh told me yesterday the sky’s the limit for me and to keep going,” said Johnson.
“I tell myself that all the time, but for your peers to also see that in you and, you know, being respected and what my peers and teammates think about me is very important. So to hear that and, you know, just hear some good criticism from people I care about, that means a lot to me.”
Additionally, Johnson said he expects to “make every play” in a game.
“If it’s coming my way, I think I can make it, so there’s no more pressure anyone can put on me than I do myself. So I’m not too worried about that.”
In a year with some uncertainty along the defensive line, the Jets need Johnson to step up. He has shown the ability to affect the game in both phases, but New York needs him to do it at a very high level.
The Florida State product has already shown flashes of this potential in 2024, as he has looked dominant at times during practice. If New York gets the best version of Johnson, he will be able to achieve his goal of stepping up his play while helping the Jets seek to break their playoff drought.
