New York Jets’ All-22 film vs. Panthers: Takk McKinley is balling

Upon first watch, the New York Jets preseason game against the Carolina Panthers was a slog to get through. The two teams combined for 358 yards of offense, including 141 through the air. That was a good sign for the Jets’ defense, though, as New York held Carolina to 156 total yards and 56 passing yards.

New York’s offense barely produced any notable plays. Despite the defense’s dominance as a unit, it did not seem like many individual players stood out with impressive performances or splashy plays. As a team, the Jets only recorded one sack (picked up by Will McDonald), three quarterback hits, three pass deflections, and zero interceptions.

There just wasn’t much that jumped off the screen on either side of the ball. And that’s where the All-22 film comes in.

After digging back through the film, the Jets’ trip to Carolina becomes a lot more interesting. Despite the game’s boring nature on first watch, there were actually some important takeaways from the game.

Multiple roster battles shifted, whether it was due to one player’s strong performance, another player’s weak performance, or both. Some players showed flashes that can be seen on film but flew under the radar on the television broadcast.

One of the top standouts was Takk McKinley, who is making a strong case for a roster spot. The former first-round pick continued displaying explosiveness as a pass rusher, but he also looked stout as a run defender.

A review of McKinley’s performance in Carolina can be found in the YouTube snippet below. For the full Jets-Panthers film review, scroll to the bottom of the page.

  • Braiden McGregor’s flashes as a pass rusher: is he worthy of a roster spot?
  • Brandon Codrington’s success in the return game: was it Codrington or the blocking?
  • Xavier Newman starts at center: could he build on his Week 1 flashes?
  • Has Israel Abanikanda shown improvement as a runner?
  • Where is Will McDonald in his development?

And much more!
