One of the New York Jets’ preseason standouts had a chance to talk about his football journey.
After Saturday’s game against the New York Giants, edge rusher Takk McKinley spoke about what pushed him to keep playing football after so much adversity.
“I think for me, it’s just my faith and the people that believe in me. Knowing I didn’t have a mom or dad growing up, I was raised by my grandma and my auntie. They could have easily given up on me, but they didn’t give up on me. So, for me, it was like I couldn’t give up on myself. I’m speechless right now, but I’m just grateful to be in front of you guys and have the interview. McKinley’s ain’t no quitters, man. I got two kids, and they look up to me. I’d be quitting on them if I quit on myself.”
The free agent signing also spoke about being out of the NFL for the entirety of the 2023 season and how that helped him grow as a person.
“Honestly, as crazy as it sounds, I believe it was the best thing for me because it forced me to mature. I did a lot of therapy and dealt with a lot of psychiatrists. I wanted to grow. I feel like in life, you’re either growing or not growing, so for me, I took the time, put in the work, and just took it day by day. I think for the longest time, I always felt like I was alone, and that’s not true at all. If you need help, say you need help. There are people in this world who really care, and I had to open up to get help. I’m just grateful, man, I’m just grateful.”
McKinley’s story is truly one of perseverance, and he has made the most of his opportunity in 2024. The edge rusher was consistently one of the team’s best players in the preseason, getting after the quarterback at will while playing solid run defense.
Considering his raw talent and production, McKinley has seemingly done enough to make the Jets’ 53-man roster. If he does, it will allow the 28-year-old to continue a great story that should be nowhere near its conclusion.
