The New York Jets are struggling to get their disgruntled star in the building. Meanwhile, their Week 1 opponent, the San Francisco 49ers, just ensured at least one of theirs will be on the field.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the 49ers have signed Brandon Aiyuk to a four-year contract extension.

There will be no trade: the 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk reached agreement today on a four-year extension that will contractually tie the wide receiver to San Francisco for the next five seasons, per ESPN sources. The drama is over and a deal – not a trade – is in place. pic.twitter.com/H2voN5X0Li

The deal totals $120 million with $76 million in guarantees. It is nearly identical to Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown’s contract. According to Schefter, it is no different than what San Francisco offered Aiyuk on August 12.
After Aiyuk held in all of training camp, he did not attend the 49ers’ first two practices this week. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan would not answer whether the team would start fining him. The new deal circumvents the issue.
San Francisco’s star left tackle, Trent Williams, is still holding out in search of a new contract. However, now that Aiyuk is locked up, the 49ers will turn their attention to him. They will likely get that done soon.
The possibility that San Francisco would not have either player was certainly enticing for the Jets. Williams is widely considered the best left tackle in the game, while Aiyuk put up one of the most efficient receiver seasons in NFL history last year. Still, Robert Saleh stated that he fully expected both players to play in Week 1. So far, he was right about at least one of them.
Meanwhile, the Jets stand at a stalemate with Haason Reddick. Joe Douglas reiterated the Jets’ position that they won’t negotiate with Reddick until he joins the team. Saleh has no plans to contact Reddick and is focusing on the players in the building.
Week 1 against San Francisco will be a challenge no matter what. With the Jets shorthanded and the 49ers building up strength, the matchup will become only more difficult.
