It is an unsurprising move from the Jets to bring back Brownlee.
The second-year wideout has some good traits as a player. He has shown flashes of being able to make incredible contested catches. At his best, Brownlee is a player that quarterbacks can rely on down the field and in the red zone.
However, Brownlee has had more than his fair share of struggles. The wideout has not been able to consistently separate at the NFL level. Cornerbacks consistently can get hands on him and force contested catch opportunities. It would not be an issue if the wideout made all of the contested catches; however, Brownlee has failed to secure many of them.
New York will benefit from having Brownlee on their practice squad. He has some developmental traits and will benefit from working more with wide receiver coach Shawn Jefferson.
Brownlee will not immediately impact the Jets and may not for the foreseeable future. But if he can become more consistent at the NFL level, he has a chance to realize his potential as a player.
The 25-year-old is now one of two wide receivers on the Jets’ practice squad, joining preseason standout Brandon Smith. New York has six wide receivers on its active roster: Garrett Wilson, Mike Williams, Xavier Gipson, Allen Lazard, Malachi Corley, and Irvin Charles.
