Following the New York Jets’ brutal season-opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers, radio personality and diehard Jets fan Joe Benigno was enraged with the team’s defensive performance.
While appearing on the radio show “Evan & Tiki” with WFAN’s Tiki Barber and Evan Roberts, Benigno made it clear he does not want to hear any talk about the Jets defense being a top unit in the league.

When asked what his biggest takeaway was from Monday night’s game, Benigno responded, “This defense is overrated. I am tired hearing about how good the defense is. They never force turnovers, they never get after the quarterback, and they can’t stop the run. Tell me how great this defense is. They got gouged this game.
“Let’s tell it like it is. That defense stunk. They got destroyed. There were guys wide open everywhere. And this kid [Jordan] Mason looked like Jim Brown. What is going on with this defense, bro?”
There is no question that the Jets’ defense had a tough time keeping the 49ers’ offense at bay. They allowed 401 yards in total while allowing Christian McCaffrey’s backup, Jordan Mason, to rush for 147 yards and a touchdown.
Although the defense was lackluster, they certainly have a chance to bounce back, as there are still 16 games left in the regular season. If they want to prove Benigno wrong, it must start Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, who graded out as the NFL’s worst offense of Week 1 according to Pro Football Focus’ system.
