In a shocking move, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson parted ways with head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday following the team’s 2-3 start to the season.

Saleh told Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer he was “blindsided” when owner Johnson walked into his office and informed him of the coaching change.

“Just talked to Robert Saleh who said [he] was blindsided by Woody Johnson walking into his office and letting him go,” Glazer posted on X. Glazer added that Saleh was “Certainly disappointed he wasn’t going to be given the opportunity to get things going with what he said is a very good roster.”

Johnson released an official statement on the team’s social media confirming the firing.

“This morning, I informed Robert Saleh that he will no longer serve as the Head Coach of the New York Jets. I thanked him for his hard work these past three-and-a-half years and wished him and his family well moving forward. This was not an easy decision, but we are not where we should be given our expectations, and I believe now is the best time for us to move in a different direction.”

Johnson added that he believes interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich can “get the most out of our talented team” for the remainder of the season.

Saleh did not produce the desired results in his tenure with the Jets. Saleh’s .351 win percentage as the Jets head coach ranks 183rd out of 201 coaches in NFL history with at least 50 games coached. With more poor and undisciplined play throughout the first five weeks of the season, Johnson decided to pull the trigger.

With high expectations unmet and continued struggles on the field, Johnson’s decision to part ways with Robert Saleh marks a pivotal moment for the Jets. They look to regain their footing and improve to 3-3 on the season this week as they host the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football, which will decide first place in the AFC East through six weeks.
