The New York Jets are making a move ahead of the NFL’s 4 p.m. trade deadline.
Wide receiver Mike Williams is headed to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
It marks the end of a short, tumultuous, and ultimately underwhelming tenure in New Jersey for the 30-year-old wideout. The Jets signed Williams to a one-year deal in March with hopes that he’d become a quality No. 2 receiver beside Garrett Wilson, but Williams finishes his Jets career with only 12 catches for 166 yards and zero touchdowns in 9 games.
Williams’ stint with the Jets will be best remembered for his game-ending miscues against the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills in back-to-back losses from Weeks 5-6. In two straight games, Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers targeted Williams on a crucial play near the end of the game, but was picked off due to the two players not being on the same page. Rodgers infamously called out Williams for running the wrong route on the play against Buffalo, causing Rodgers to draw ire from the media.
With Williams gone, the Jets’ wide receiver room consists of Garrett Wilson, Davante Adams, Xavier Gipson, Malachi Corley, and Irvin Charles for the time being, as Allen Lazard is on injured reserve with a chest injury. Lazard will be eligible to return in Week 14 against the Miami Dolphins. The Jets also have wide receivers Jason Brownlee and Brandon Smith on their practice squad.
