The current regime for the New York Jets is officially gone.
According to multiple reports, New York has officially fired general manager Joe Douglas. SNY’s Connor Hughes was first on the reported firing.
The Athletic’s Dianna Russini added that the firing was made with the team’s front office search in mind.
New York wants to find their next GM immediately, and keeping Douglas in tow would have made for an awkward situation.
Unfortunately for Douglas, the writing was on the wall for him, and Chairman Woody Johnson confirmed that writing shortly after the news broke.
With a 30-64 record, the general manager did a poor job in the results column. He had some hits, such as Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson in the draft and D.J. Reed in free agency.
However, the misses were just as big.
Douglas never truly fixed the offensive line, starting with the selection of Mekhi Becton over Tristian Wirfs. He whiffed on the quarterback, first with his selection of Zach Wilson and the failure of the Aaron Rodgers experience.
Many of his draft picks did not work out, and he struggled to build depth consistently.
Fans have hailed Douglas as a great asset to the organization, but the reality is that he was average at best and very poor at worst. He did not accomplish what he set out to do: fix the Jets’ offensive line woes and end their playoff drought.
New York will now be on the hunt for a new head coach, general manager, and possibly a quarterback. The hope is that, unlike in past years, they will learn from their mistakes and make the best decisions for the franchise moving forward.
