According to a report from Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Aaron Rodgers’ tenure with the New York Jets is unlikely to extend into 2025, despite the four-time MVP seeking to continue playing football.
In a report shared on Saturday morning, Russini stated, citing sources, “Rodgers still wants to play in 2025, just not for the New York Jets.”

Russini also reported that the divorce could happen much sooner than expected. She states, “It appears increasingly likely that the four-time MVP, who is banged up, could be placed on injured reserve or possibly benched over the next few weeks, signaling the end of his disastrous time with the Jets. Some around the league say they won’t be surprised if Rodgers is cut in-season.”
Things have moved quickly for Rodgers and the Jets within the past few weeks. After making last-ditch efforts to save their season and push for the playoffs – whether it was the firing of Robert Saleh, trading for Davante Adams, or bringing in Haason Reddick – the Jets’ season has swiftly come to an effective end, culminating in the firing of Joe Douglas during the team’s Week 12 bye. This was followed by the release of a scathing report that detailed Woody Johnson’s involvement in the team’s 2024 season.
With all of this drama, the writing has been on the wall that Rodgers’ Jets career would likely come to an end after the 2024 season, but it appears things could move quicker than expected.
If Rodgers were benched, cut, or placed on injured reserve, Tyrod Taylor would be the next man up, while Adrian Martinez would likely be called up from the practice squad to back him up. Rookie quarterback Jordan Travis remains on the reserve/NFI list.
