Michael Kay is glad that ‘jackass’ Aaron Rodgers is ‘not doing well’

The New York Jets kicked off their 2024 campaign with lofty expectations, but they have fallen far short. The team is 3-8 with six regular season games left to play and a future completely uncertain—without leaders in place.

Although Jets fans have never been more depressed, there’s at least one prominent New York sports voice hanging out on the other side. ESPN NY Radio host Michael Kay, the namesake of “The Michael Kay Show,” could not hold back his excitement over watching Aaron Rodgers struggle, while also bluntly describing the signal-caller as a “kind of a jackass.”

“This is going to make me look bad, and I don’t care; I’m just gonna be honest,” Kay said on Tuesday’s episode of “The Michael Kay Show.” “I’m glad he’s not doing well because he’s kind of a jackass. I’m glad he’s not doing well. I wasn’t rooting for him at the beginning of the year, I never wanted him to get hurt, but he has such a cockiness about him, and most professional athletes do, that there was no way he was going to fail.”

A prominent reason for high expectations was the four-time NFL MVP’s return after tearing his Achilles just four plays into the Jets’ 2023 season.

Rodgers has been a massive disappointment this season. He is having one of his worst statistical seasons, completing just 63.4 percent of his passes for 2,442 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions over 11 games.

Rodgers has also gone 33 straight games without recording 300+ passing yards; he has never had a streak longer than 12 games in his career.

Kay also spoke about how Rodgers’ struggles could “humanize” the 40-year-old quarterback.

“The fact that he’s struggling so much, maybe it humanizes him,” Kay added. “Maybe it brings him down a peg. I wanted the Jets to do well for the Jets’ sake and Jets fans’ sake, but since they’re not doing well and he’s right in the middle of it, his performance got Douglas fired, his performance got Saleh fired, his performance got (Nathaniel) Hackett demoted. It kinda makes me feel warm and fuzzy as the holidays approach.”

While Aaron Rodgers certainly deserves some of the blame for the team’s abysmal play, the Jets’ collapse should not be entirely attributed to him. Additionally, the radio host’s (now common) outbursts of this sort could reveal more about his current state of affairs in the competitive New York sports radio market.
