‘Most trying year of my life’: NY Jets players vent after latest collapse

“I think this year has been the most trying year of my life.”

That quote from Breece Hall just about sums up the New York Jets’ season so far. After losing a key fumble in the Jets’ 21-26 loss to Seattle, the third-year running back spoke about how the 2024 season has panned out.

“I just have a lot of expectations for myself and just haven’t been on the successful side of that. We go work and work hard every day, but you know, no excuses for it. If I can’t take care of the ball, I shouldn’t be in the game,” said Hall.

“So I got to be got to be better regardless. I felt like today, you know, I lost us the game. I never feel good about that, especially being a competitive person.”

Hall also spoke about what changed for the Jets over the last three quarters.

“Turning the ball over, me not being good enough today, fumbles, not being as locked into our details. It starts with the guys touching the ball the most. So, it starts with our center, it starts with Aaron (Rodgers), it starts with myself, and like I said, there are no excuses. So, if we can’t take care of the ball, then it just sucks.”

Cornerback Sauce Gardner spoke about the team’s defensive penalties in the fourth quarter of the game.

“I always say this: The refs are not perfect. We’re not perfect. They think they see something; they’re going to throw the flag. So, I won’t sit up here and just talk bad about the refs. Ain’t nobody perfect. They were doing their job how they feel is the highest level, and that’s just what it is.

“We’ve got to live with those results, and so do they. They get paid to do a job to the best of their ability and the flags that they threw, they thought they were doing their job to the best of their ability.”

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers said that the two-play stretch where he “missed Garrett (Wilson) open to go up 28-7 and threw a pick-six” changed the “momentum” of the game. He also spoke more in-depth about the missed touchdown.

“I tried to throw it about five inside. The wind was a little inconsistent. Maybe I should have thrown it a little flatter because he was wide open. I’ve got to hit that, doesn’t matter, windy, I’ve played in wind before. It was inconsistent, but I’ve got to hit that.”

Rodgers also spoke about why the Jets cannot “finish” games this season.

“I don’t know. I think, again, games are often won in the first, second, and third quarters. The fourth quarter is an important time of the game but plays at the end of the second quarter cost us this game. Then comes the fourth quarter: its execution, its strain, the little things, and its accuracy. And we just have a lot to go around, myself included, first and foremost.”

There really is not much left to say regarding the Jets. The offense shows flashes but has far more mistakes. The defense has great drives, but between inconsistency and a lack of discipline, it tends to have letdown drives at the worst moments.

It will be fascinating to see how the Jets finish their 2024 season. Even after 13 weeks, there are so many possibilities for how New York could wrap up this campaign.
