“He’s struggling a bit, so we will see how he goes this week… he’s been playing with some pain and is fighting his way through that. But it’s not improving as much as he would like,” said Ulbrich.
When asked about potentially shutting Hall down, the head coach said they are “not at that point yet” regarding his injury.
Ulbrich also revealed that special teams standout Irv Charles tore his ACL and will be out for the remainder of the season. The head coach spoke about what Charles has meant to the Jets after sharing the news.
“In a very tough and challenging year, he was an absolute bright spot for the team. I really believe that, had he finished the season playing the way he was playing, he would have been a shoo-in for the Pro Bowl. He took amazing jumps and leaps as far as his contributions to us this season. I am really excited about his future.”
In terms of other injuries, Ulbrich said they are “gathering more information” on RB Kene Nwangwu’s hand injury, and his status is up in the air for this week. The team is “hopeful” that Alijah Vera-Tucker will play this week, and Haason Reddick is dealing with an illness. On the positive side, CB Sauce Gardner has been cleared and will return to play against the Jaguars this week.
It is brutal for the Jets to lose Charles, who has been the anchor point of their special teams units this season. He has made key tackles and set the unit up for plenty of success; New York could see some struggles in trying to fill his void.
As for Hall, the Jets need to play his injury safely. He is one of the best players on the team for the present and future; with Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis in the fold, there is no need to risk severe injury this season.
