The New York Jets have officially begun lining up candidates for their 2025 head coaching job.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Jets are expected to interview Ron Rivera for the team’s head coaching job this week.
Rivera, 62, has 13 years of NFL head coaching experience, featuring a 102-103 record (.498), two NFL Coach of the Year awards, and a Super Bowl appearance.
Rivera kickstarted his NFL head coaching career with the Carolina Panthers in 2011, where he spent nine seasons. As a rookie head coach in 2011, Rivera inherited a 2-14 team before leading the organization to four playoff appearances in five years (2013-2017), including a 15-1 season and a Super Bowl appearance in 2015.
After being fired by the Panthers in Week 13 of the 2019 season, Rivera was hired by the Washington Commanders in 2020, where he served as the head coach for four seasons. Over his tenure, Washington recorded a 26-40-1 record, including an 0-1 record in the playoffs. Following a disappointing 4-13 season in 2023, Rivera was relieved of his duties. He did not have a coaching job in 2024.
Following his firing last offseason, Rivera told ESPN’s John Keim he is eager to return to an NFL sideline, even if it means he is a defensive coordinator.
“You take a step back, and you learn and grow from it,” Rivers stated. “It’s like I told other players, if you look at this year as a lost year, you’re [hurting] yourself. You should look at it as a year to learn and understand why things happen. This was probably the greatest learning experience I’ve had in a while this year. I mean, a lot of things came to light at certain times this past season that I think going forward will really help me.”
