One step closer to a reunion?
Appearing on ESPN Radio, Rex Ryan said he expects to speak with the New York Jets about their head coach vacancy.
“I believe I will. I have not had any conversation with anyone in the organization, but I believe I will. They’re not going to bring anyone in until after the season ends, and this is the way Woody (Johnson) has always operated. We will see what happens once the season is over.”
Without a general manager or full front office in place, it is difficult to predict the type of coach the Jets will want, let alone the one they will hire. As a result, it is smart that the team is talking to as many different candidates as possible.
Should Ryan be a primary candidate? No, not in the slightest.
But it does New York no harm to at least talk to him in an interview. It would be positive to hear Ryan’s thoughts on the roster, how he would change the culture, and other football-related topics. New York, if they like any of those ideas, could then use that as a baseline for what candidate they hire.
For an organization that has been so bad for so long, the next head coach needs to be the right one. Every avenue needs to be explored.
As a result, talking to Ryan is not a bad thing. Even if the Jets do not hire him, speaking to the former coach in an interview could steer them toward the right candidate for the job.
Currently, the only known candidate for the job is Ron Rivera, who is scheduled to interview with the team this week.
