Could there be a reunion in Florham Park?
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Rex Ryan is set to interview for the New York Jets’ head coach vacancy on Tuesday.
Ryan, 62, spent six seasons as the Jets’ head coach (2009-2014), compiling a 46-50 record while leading the team to consecutive AFC Championship games in 2009 and 2010. The Jets have not returned to the playoffs since.
Following a 4-12 season in 2014, the Jets dismissed Ryan. He spent the following two seasons as the Buffalo Bills’ head coach (2015-2016), compiling a 15-16 record while failing to make the playoffs.
Ryan currently serves as an ESPN analyst, where he has been actively campaigning for a second chance with the Jets.
“I’d like to, there’s no doubt about it,” said Ryan of the Jets on “Pardon My Take” in November. “I’ve let everyone know that I definitely would be interested in that job, even though I’ve got a great gig.
“I think I have some unfinished business, especially with that franchise,” Ryan added. “That particular franchise, you know my dad [Buddy Ryan] was there forever, he won a Super Bowl, and it’s super close to me. I would get back in it if I thought I could make a difference, and I think I could make a big difference with that team.”
Now, his wish has been granted, and he will have an opportunity to interview for the job two days after the conclusion of the 2024 regular season.
As the Jets continue to search for their future head coach and general manager, Ryan will join former Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera and former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel as the three candidates who have interviewed for the team’s head coach vacancy thus far.
