Multiple New York Jets players want the team’s next head coach to be the man who is fourth on the franchise’s all-time interceptions list, Aaron Glenn. The Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator is also a popular candidate among the fanbase.
Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter, however, is vouching for a different candidate.
Carter believes that Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores would make a good fit for the Jets.
Speaking to Kyle Odegard of Casino Apps, the legendary wideout dished on why he believes Flores would make a good head coach with the Jets. Primarily concerning the defense, Carter thinks the team could get back to their elite ways defensively with Flores at the helm. On top of that, he believes that it would make a Jets-Dolphins rivalry that has cooled off in recent years rekindled yet again.
“I think in a city like New York, with the Jets, he would be a viable candidate with that defense. They’re playing some good defense in New York, and he has that background with Miami, so he could add to that rivalry.”
Flores is an interesting option for New York. The pros and cons of his previous head coaching tenure in Miami have been publicly displayed, and not everything has been positive.
Recently, former Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick referred to Flores as a “dictator” and was wary about him receiving another head coaching option (although Fitzpatrick expressed confidence that Flores has “grown” and “learned” from his mistakes).
The Jets’ coaching decisions weren’t the only thing on the mind of the Hall of Fame wide receiver in his discussion with Odegard. Another topic that was touched on in their conversation involved what the Jets should do with their own star wide receiver, Garrett Wilson.
Carter believes that the biggest problem ailing Wilson (and the Jets) is not having competent quarterback play.
“Young, old, you have to get a quarterback that’s competent. That’s the No. 1 thing [the Jets] need to do, and then shore it up by keeping the young players that have been successful. [Wilson] should be a part of their future. He’s been very consistent, even with sporadic quarterback play.”
Carter’s comments echo what most Jets fans believe. However, finding competent quarterback play in 2025 may be easier said than done with the current options the Jets have on the table at the moment.
Regardless, it’s interesting to hear an outside perspective on the Jets, especially one involving a Hall of Fame player who continues to have a keen eye on the sport.
