It’s official. The New York Jets will need a new starting tight end heading into the 2025 season.
Their previous starter, Tyler Conklin, officially signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers, as reported by his agent Mike McCartney.
The full details of the contract have not been announced at this time.
Multiple teams previously had an interest in Conklin. Following the first wave of free agency, the 29-year-old was considered one of the best available players on the open market.
Now, he joins a Chargers roster that just reached the playoffs last season and is looking to go further in a competitive AFC West.
Conklin’s Impact On Jets
When Conklin signed a three-year deal worth over $20 million with the Jets, New York was looking for a pass catcher to make life easier for their former second-overall quarterback Zach Wilson.
While Wilson only lasted two seasons with Conklin on the roster, the tight end was a consummate professional throughout his time with the team.
In three seasons with the team, Conklin recorded 170 catches for 1,622 yards and seven touchdowns. He was incredibly durable—playing in all but one game during his stretch with the Jets as well. He was also an excellent locker-room presence with his teammates and media members.
That leadership will surely be missed on a young Jets squad, but it leaves the tight end position open for an acquisition.
Whether that be through the Draft or free agency.
In a deep draft class with top prospects like Tyler Warren and Colston Loveland, Gang Green should feel confident that they can find a quality tight end on a better overall deal that fits their youth movement.
