Three days after cutting punter Thomas Morstead, the New York Jets cut bait on another veteran special-teams player.

Per the Jets’ official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Jets have cut kicker Greg Zuerlein.

Zuerlein, 37, is coming off a brutal season. It could easily be described as the worst season in his 13-year NFL career.

The now-former Jets placekicker connected on only 9 of his 15 field goal attempts. Worse yet, several missed kicks cost his team during crunch time of the fourth quarter, particularly early in the 2024 season.

Greg the Leg or Legatron, as the kids often call him, arrived in Northern New Jersey in 2022, just in time for Robert Saleh’s second season. Not only did Saleh’s young Jets surprise the football world by getting off to an impressive 5-2 and eventually 6-3 start, but Zuerlein resurrected his professional career.

Zuerlein drilled 30 of 37 field-goal attempts and 28 of 29 extra-point tries that season. Better yet, his long of 60 yards confirmed the belief that the Jets had finally found a kicker after suffering through years of uncertainty at the position.

A year later, Zuerlein kicked even more productively. He missed just three field goals all season (35 of 38).

The good times did not last, however, and now, Aaron Glenn and company are looking for youth to step up at the position this summer.

Zuerlein’s 2025 cap hit was scheduled to be around $4.7 million. The Jets are on the hook for about $2.3 million in dead money.

Without Greg Zuerlein, veteran Anders Carlson and 20-year-old UDFA Caden Davis are the two placekickers holding down spots on the New York Jets roster.
