The New York Jets do not have a rich history at many positions on the football field.
Center is one of the few where they do.
From 1998 to 2016, the Jets only had two primary starting centers: Kevin Mawae and Nick Mangold. The pair combined for 13 Pro Bowl appearances across a 19-season run in the middle of New York’s offensive line.
Don’t forget about Joe Fields, who made three All-Pro appearances across 13 seasons with the Jets (1975-88).
Following Mangold’s retirement after the 2016 season, the Jets underwent a rough patch at center. Then, Joe Tippmann came along in 2023 as a second-round pick, offering potential to become the next great center in Jets history.
Tippmann began his rookie year at right guard before finishing the season back at center. The 2024 season was his first as a full-time starting center in the NFL. The Wisconsin product started all 17 games for the Jets, not missing a single offensive snap.
Opinions on Tippmann’s performance are all over the map. Pro Football Focus was extremely high on his performance, ranking him as the NFL’s eighth-best center in 2024. However, other fans and media members believe he will have to compete for his job against Josh Myers, a free agent pickup who is only due for a $3 million cap hit this season.
Our film review of Myers affirmed that the former Packer is a quality backup, but not a legitimate candidate to start. This is Tippmann’s job.
The question is, exactly how good is Tippmann at this point in his development? Is he on a trajectory to join Mangold, Mawae, and Fields as the Jets’ next star center? Or does he have a very long way to go until he reaches those heights?
Only the film can answer those questions.
