Garrett Wilson will be a New York Jet for the long haul.
On Monday, Wilson and the Jets agreed to terms on a four-year, $130 million contract extension that includes $90 million guaranteed. It ties Wilson to the Jets through the 2030 season.
Wilson’s contract extension is relieving news for the Jets’ fanbase. After hearing his name involved in trade rumors earlier this year, Jets fans can now enjoy the comfort of knowing that the best young wide receiver in franchise history is not going anywhere.
However, Wilson’s lucrative contract raises expectations for the soon-to-be 25-year-old receiver. His contract includes the fourth-most guaranteed money among wide receivers. The three players above him are CeeDee Lamb, Ja’Marr Chase, and Justin Jefferson, who have combined for nine All-Pro appearances and nine seasons with at least 1,200 receiving yards.
Wilson has yet to accomplish either of those feats.
While Wilson is an extremely talented young player whose career has gotten off to a historic start, he is now expected to reach a new level in his game.
To date, Wilson’s underwhelming production relative to his talent level can be largely chalked up to the poor quarterback play he has dealt with. However, the quarterbacks are not solely responsible for Wilson not reaching the All-Pro ranks of the wide receiver position. There are some holes in his game that he must patch up to become the best version of himself.
Once he patches those holes, Wilson will consistently produce like the top-five talent he is being paid as – and it won’t matter who is at quarterback.
What exactly are those holes?
