With the start of the preseason less than one week away, the New York Jets’ injury report is beginning to grow lengthy in Florham Park.
Per Aaron Glenn’s pre-practice press conference, quarterback Tyrod Taylor sat out of Monday’s practice with a knee injury, while rookie tight end Mason Taylor missed due to an ankle injury.
The severity of both injuries remains unknown, but head coach Aaron Glenn will surely provide more later in the week.
Second-round rookie Mason Taylor is making his presence felt early in Jets training camp, showing why the team believes he can become a key weapon in the passing game.
Taylorโs crisp route-running, reliable hands, and impressive catch radius have stood out, and his blend of size and athleticism allows him to line up in multiple spots, including inline and in the slot, giving the offense added flexibility heading into the season.
With Taylor sidelined, fourth-year tight end Jeremy Ruckert is expected to see increased reps, sharing the workload with free-agent addition Stone Smartt as the two compete for the No. 2 tight end role.
As for the quarterback, Tyrod Taylor, he was still in uniform but did not practice due to the injury.
Though his snaps came in low-leverage moments last season, the quarterback made the most of his limited opportunities, completing 17 of 22 passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns without a turnover.
Behind Taylor, the Jets have two other quarterbacks on the roster: undrafted rookie Brady Cook and second-year NFL quarterback Adrian Martinez, both competing for the teamโs No. 3 job on the depth chart.
With Tyrod Taylor and Mason Taylor sidelined, players like quarterbacks Cook and Martinez, along with tight ends Ruckert and Smartt, will have a chance to capitalize on extra reps and make their case as roster battles heat up in Florham Park.
