When the New York Jets hired general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn, the two knew that their work was cut out for them in their first season together.
New York won just five games the year prior, had an aging roster, and seemed to be years away from true playoff contention.
What the two have done to build the roster into one that can compete this season has been commendable. They have shifted their offensive philosophy into one that should cause matchup problems for many teams around the league.
But is it enough? Has Glenn, and more specifically Mougey, done enough to turn the Jets around?
Some Jets fans will argue not.
Darren Mougey review
The argument against Mougey heading into Week 1 of the new season is quite simple. While the schematic changes from the new coaching staff are welcome, the level of talent from their roster can only go so far.
Holes at wide receiver, tight end, defensive line, and safety have left some fans worried that the new regime hasn’t done enough to turn the team around. Combined with their decision to sign a deficient quarterback in Justin Fields over drafting a rookie or signing a more competent veteran, many are wondering whether the Jets can even improve upon their five-win season in 2024.
Those concerns aren’t entirely grounded in reality.
New York’s “retool” under Mougey and Glenn was never going to be a one-year process. The Jets are making tremendous strides under their new regime.
Glenn’s cultural overhaul is taking shape, while Mougey has added key long-term pieces such as Armand Membou and Brandon Stephens. The hope is that more members of Mougey’s first draft class, such as Mason Taylor, Azareye’h Thomas, and Arian Smith, can also establish themselves as building blocks.

It won’t happen in a single year, but the Jets have laid the foundations to turn the tide on their losing ways.
Mougey has done his part in building a competent team around the coaching staff. It’s up to Glenn to turn the roster’s moldable pieces into winners.
The way New York’s head coach and general manager have worked in tandem, it shouldn’t be long before the Jets get back to competing on a yearly basis. Fans just have to be patient to see the culmination of Glenn and Mougey’s process.
