Despite being one of the New York Jets’ most polarizing additions this offseason, cornerback Brandon Stephens has steadily progressed throughout the summer.
The former Baltimore Raven’s upward trajectory has caught the eye of his defensive coordinator.
Speaking to the media ahead of the Jets’ final open training camp practice, Steve Wilks commended Stephens for his progress.
“B-Steve has just definitely taken a step ahead since OTAs and training camp,” said the longtime defensive coach.
Stephens, 27, spent his first four NFL seasons with the Ravens after being selected in the third round of the 2021 draft. He entered the league as a safety before moving to cornerback in 2022, eventually earning a full-time role in the secondary.
By 2023, Stephens had secured a starting job, appearing in 16 games and posting two interceptions, 11 passes defended, and an 82.4 passer rating allowed, according to Pro Football Focus.
However, his production did not reach new heights in 2024. Stephens went without an interception in 17 starts, recorded 10 passes defended, and surrendered 806 receiving yards, the second-most among NFL cornerbacks, along with four touchdowns allowed. His passer rating allowed jumped to 107.4.
Signed to a three-year, $36 million deal this offseason, Stephens has the speed and size to hold his own against elite pass catchers.
However, his ball skills have been a persistent flaw, and until he proves he can consistently finish plays, he will remain short of the league’s premier defensive backs.
Stephens has shown signs of improvement in that area throughout the summer. He has consistently recorded interceptions in training camp, and in last weekend’s preseason game against the Giants, he recorded an impressive pass breakup on the only throw in his direction.
With his defensive coordinator behind him, Stephens is trending up, and it has the Jets believing his best football is ahead.
