When the New York Jets announced their intention to run a “by-committee” approach to their running back room, plenty of analysts and fans wondered what that would mean for Breece Hall’s future with the team – despite head coach Aaron Glenn announcing his intention to make Hall a key part of the roster in 2025.
Despite consistently defending their former second-round running back, trade rumors have followed Hall throughout training camp and the preseasonโso much so that Glenn needed to remind everyone of his intentions during the final days of camp on Wednesday afternoon.
Jets Address Trade Rumors
In two preseason games this August, Hall has averaged 3.5 yards per carry. The below-average mark has been overshadowed by second-year running back Braelon Allen (4.5).
While the stock surrounding the Wisconsin product is growing, that doesn’t mean the Jets will give him the keys.
The trio of Hall, Allen, and Isaiah Davis each bring unique skills to the offense. With New York transitioning to a run-first approach, the Jets are expected to rely on all three players in 2025.
That is precisely why the team isn’t willing to trade Hall at the moment.
“We have three good running backs and I keep saying that,” Glenn said. “They all have different skill sets that we’re going to utilize. And that does not mean I’m trading Breece (Hall). I just love having three good guys. I wish I had more.”
Hall is entering the final year of his contract with the Jets. He is still only 24 years old, but already has over 600 touches in his three-year career with the team. A big year could lead to a big payday next offseason for the Iowa State product.
As good as Hall could be, though, the first few years of his career have been plagued by inconsistency. He finished fourth in the league in yards from scrimmage in 2023 but responded with a below-average season in 2024.
Sandwiched between the successful 2023 campaign were injury-riddled seasons in 2022 and 2024. Last season, Hall finished with his lowest yards-per-carry average and fumbled twice as much as he did in his first two years in the league.
There is reason to suspect the 2025 season could be his last with the team.
New York won’t be giving him away easily, though. If the star running back can finally reach his full potential as a runner and receiver, he could end up being a Pro Bowl player this season.
That also hinges on whether he can stay healthy. He missed only one game in 2024 but dealt with a lower-body injury for most of the second half of the season.
Fans and analysts have linked teams such as the Dallas Cowboys to Hall for the last few months. The Jets have denied any and all potential trade conversations when they have come up.
It might be time we all start listeningโand keep Hall’s name off the trade block.
