New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn announced ahead of Saturday’s practice that quarterback Justin Fields has cleared concussion protocol and will start for the team when they take on the Miami Dolphins on Monday night.
Fields suffered the concussion in the fourth quarter of New York’s Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills. In the two games he has started for the Jets this season, Fields has completed 57 percent of his passes with one passing touchdown, and a 91.1 passer rating.
The former first-round pick out of Ohio State missed New York’s Week 3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In his place, Tyrod Taylor threw two touchdown strikes and an interception as part of the Jets’ 29-27 loss to the NFC South leaders.
With Fields’ return, Taylor will go back to being the team’s backup against the Miami Dolphins.
Miami has won eight of the last 10 contests against the Jets. Both teams are winless going into the Monday night matchup. A win for either team would be an important step.
In the case of the Jets, getting their starting quarterback back should be a big boost.
As part of his final practice injury report, Glenn also confirmed that edge rusher Jermaine Johnson would miss Monday night’s contest.
