New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn created some controversy during last Sunday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Well, sort of …
As edge rusher Will McDonald was running toward a lead-changing touchdown in the closing minutes of the contest, Glenn was seen running along with his defender on the sideline. Once McDonald reached the end zone, the new head coach busted out his signature dance moves he used even when he was a player.
The clip of Glenn has since gone viral.
Some Jets fans have loved to see the passion from their head coach. Others, though, questioned why Glenn was so emotional in a game that wasn’t over.
New York may have lost that very game, but Glenn has remained steadfast in his belief that he did nothing wrong while celebrating a big play for his team.
And the players have ralied behind that very notion.
Garrett Wilson defends Glenn’s sideline passion
For a team that has seen 14 straight years without a playoff berth, it isn’t hard to find an embarrassing moment from each year. From a quarterback contracting mono to a receiver requesting a trade during a winning streak, there have been ugly moments throughout the last few years for New York.
Glenn’s viral dancing video isn’t one of those moments, though.
It has, instead, been a rallying cry for the organization and players to do even more to make sure the coach can continue to act how he normally does on the sideline.
“To be completely truthful, I thought it was hilarious,” Garrett Wilson said after practice Thursday. “I thought it was awesome. We’re going to get on the board and start winning games. It was cool to see that. We just have to make sure that when he does do that, we are going to finish the game.
“To see our coach be himself, that is stuff you love to play for.”
Several other offensive players have spoken out in defense of Glenn’s sideline dance moves. Rookie tight end Mason Taylor says the team “loves it” when the Jets head coach shows his passion on the field.
The next step, as Wilson alluded to, is closing out games so Glenn’s sideline passion can be celebrated as a good thing—not as a premature response to a game that didn’t end up in their favor.
There are a lot of things that the Jets need to improve on in regards to their 0-3 record.
The team, though, seems firmly in defense of their head coach—an important step for the start of any new culture change going forward.
