At 0-4, it’s obvious that many things have gone wrong for the New York Jets.
If you’re looking for silver linings, though, you have to start on the offensive side of the ball.
In some ways, the Jets’ offense has seemed to be on the verge of consistent success. They rank third in rushing yards per game (144.5) and third in yards per rush attempt (5.2), showing that their goal of being a run-first team is working.
Overall, the Jets’ offense ranks a respectable 18th in points per drive (2.1), which isn’t too shabby considering they have the fifth-most turnovers (7).
Speaking to the media this week, offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand implored the media to “watch the tape” when asked why he feels optimistic about the direction of the offense. Engstrand believes the tape shows that the offense will be “just fine” as soon as it eliminates the turnovers and penalties.
โThereโs a lot of good stuff on that tape. Thereโs a lot of good things on that tape from all the different positions,” Engstrand said. “And then we say, just like weโve been talking about, we got to eliminate the turnovers. We got to eliminate the penalties. We eliminate that, and weโre moving the ball. Weโre moving the ball, and all of a sudden, we got penalties. So, we eliminate that, and weโre going to be just fine. Weโre going to be just fine, thereโs a lot of stuff on the tape that you got to like.โ
On that note… what exactly does Engstrand see on the tape that has him feeling good about the offense’s future?
