For as difficult as a 1-7 start can be, the long-term outlook of a franchise can shift quickly if the offensive line play is up to par.

The New York Jets’ young offensive line has been more than just a quality unit—it’s been the team’s most significant reason for optimism this season. Three of the five starters were drafted by the organization within the first two rounds of recent drafts.

The others have been savvy free-agent additions.

While three of those starters—including an injured veteran—are set to hit free agency after this season, New York has a golden opportunity to keep the group intact for the foreseeable future, and that could change how the Jets’ rebuild looks going into 2026.

Although Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams are no longer here, it’s impossible to ignore which side of the ball the two All-Pros play. Moreover, it’s only natural to surmise that the franchise’s philosophy could be changing before our very eyes.

This line of thinking leads us to the big heavies.

Jets’ O-Line holds the key to the future

When the Jets have drafted quarterbacks in the top five in the past, the organization failed to surround them with a capable offensive line.

Sam Darnold and Zach Wilson, in particular, never had competent protection early in their careers. That was a significant reason both struggled in New York.

It’s also a problem the Jets appear ready to avoid with their next quarterback.

Surrounding a young signal-caller with a reliable offensive line can do wonders for a team’s development. Instead of having a quarterback running for his life and forcing plays that aren’t there, a strong front five can stabilize an offense and establish a dependable rushing attack—a young quarterback’s best friend.

New York still has plenty of holes to address in the coming years—wide receiver, cornerback, edge rusher, defensive tackle, and, of course, quarterback.

But for the first time in a long while, offensive line isn’t one of those needs.

It’s a reality that changes how the Jets can approach this offseason.

Future roster outlook

The most important task for the Jets moving into 2026 and beyond is finding the right quarterback to lead the team’s next era. Whether that ends up being Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, Alabama’s Ty Simpson, or a prospect from the 2027 NFL draft class, New York seems destined to hand the reins to a rookie soon.

That makes the offensive line the most important position group on the roster moving forward. The more continuity that the unit builds, the stronger it will become.

With young tackles like Olu Fashanu and seventh-overall pick Armand Membou anchoring the edges, the Jets already have a foundation capable of protecting their next franchise quarterback.

That’s encouraging news for whoever lines up under center in the near future.

The 2025 season may already be a wash, but if the offensive line continues to play well, it could provide the kind of foundation New York needs to build sustained success finally.
